DOCG and DOC Classifications Explained

It wasn’t until 1963 that Italy introduced the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) and DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) classifications. Wines that aspire to receive the DOCG designation must meet specific requirements set forth by the governing body, which is comprised of local wine producers. The regulations outline the conditions that must be satisfied to attain this prestigious label.

Firstly, the wine must be produced within a designated area, typically following municipal and/or provincial borders. Additionally, only certain authorized grape varieties can be used in the wine’s production. After harvest, the grapes must be processed using a regulated production and vinification method. Lastly, the finished wine must adhere to a set of criteria, such as the duration of the production process, alcohol levels, acidity, sugar content, and various additional requirements.

Each year, a tasting committee evaluates the wines. If a wine meets the specified requirements, it is granted the coveted classification. To maintain high standards and ensure quality, the DOCG and DOC classifications are overseen by the government.
